Course
Description: This course uses the communicative approach to language
teaching/learning. It pays equal attention to developing all four language
skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing, with a special emphasis on
the oral aspects of speaking English, to provide students a well-rounded
development progress in all areas of language learning.
Course objectives:
The general objectives for this course are
to:

Develop speaking, listening, reading and
writing competence.

Expand the range of vocabulary and expressions
used.
·
Develop critical thinking skills.
·
Practice speaking skills through class
discussions and presentations.
·
Apply target language during class
discussions and presentations.
·
Be comfortable in a student-centered
classroom environment.
By the end of this course you will
have:

necessary to communicate effectively in different settings.

An exam will be given on the first day of the second week of class to assess the English proficiency of each student.

Midterm 1 will be an oral exam covering Units 1-6 of the textbook.

Exam (40%)
The final exam will be a written standardized exam (30%) based on the textbook and the English Post Test (10%). |

|
You are expected to behave
appropriately in your class. This
means:
·
Pay attention to the teacher.
·
Do not talk when your teacher or your classmates are talking.
·
Participate in class. If the
teacher asks you a question, try to answer it.
·
Bring your book, pencil, paper and dictionary
to class every day.
·
Do not bring a photocopied version of the textbook; all students MUST
have a genuine textbook.

Attendance
If a
student is absent, they must first talk to their Department Head and obtain an excused absence form. That form must then be given to the
instructor. Only absences for
sickness, car accidents, military service interviews, training for army reservists,
departmental events, and mourning will be considered with documentary
evidence. Students can have up to TWO CLASSES excused per semester. Allowance for any further excuses is up to
the instructor's discretion.
If a
student is absent (unexcused) from one
third of the classes in that semester, the student will automatically
receive an “F.” Students should check their attendance as often as possible
to avoid mistakes.
A
student will lose 0.5 points from their attendance every time they are tardy.

English Corner and Star English English Corner and Star English are non-credit classes available to WSU and WIC students and staff. English Corner is a classroom setting that focus on a variety of topics for 1 hour. Star English is a one-on-one 15 minute conversation class with a native English instructor. Both classes are held in W6-101. The WSU Site Assistant can provide a schedule and more detailed information for students.

Students who actively participate in English
Corner will receive a stamp on a point card for each hour they
participated.
o
Three (3) stamps = One (1) participation point towards their final
grade.
o
Six (6) stamps = Two (2) participation points towards their final
grade.
o
Nine (9) stamps = Three (3) participation points towards their final
grade (the maximum).
Star English:
·
Students who actively participate in Star
English will receive a stamp on a point card for each hour they
participated.
o
Five (5) stamps = One (1) participation point towards their final
grade.
o
Ten (10) stamps = Two (2) participation points towards their final
grade.
o Fifteen (15) stamps = Three (3)
participation points towards their final grade (the maximum).
**Students can only receive a maximum of three (3) participation
points in a single English class**
English
Tutoring Lab (ETL)
ETL is designed to
provide Woosong University students with the critical extracurricular support
they need in our General English Language programs. English Tutoring Lab will
provide students with 1 on 1 support to assist them in mastering specific
questions or problems--related to English--they may have encountered in their
General English Language classes.
Focusing on accuracy and fluency, ETL aims to provide students with a
safe, comfortable and informative environment to improve their English
language skill, ability and comfort. (No stamps are given for this class.)

This course will have two exams: a Midterm Exam and a Final Exam. The instructor may also
administer quizzes or other assignments at any time during the course. Homework and Participation will be
assessed at the discretion of the instructor as per standard Woosong policy.
